What do enchantment levels mean?

Roman numerals show an enchantment's strength. Level I is the first level, followed by II, III, IV and V. Higher levels usually strengthen the same effect: more damage, more protection, faster mining, better drops or shorter reload time.

Enchantments with maximum level I are on/off effects. Mending, Silk Touch, Infinity and the curses do not have a stronger second rank.

How to choose the right enchantments

Minecraft enchantments work best when they match the job of the item. An everyday sword, a mining tool, an underwater helmet and Nether armor all need different priorities. This page helps you look up effects and plan useful combinations before you spend levels.

Best enchantments by gear type

Tools usually benefit from Efficiency, Unbreaking, Mending and either Fortune or Silk Touch. Weapons often need one damage enchantment, Looting, Unbreaking and Mending. For armor, Protection is the most flexible choice, while Fire, Blast or Projectile Protection can be better for specific risks.

Anvil, books and XP costs

The Minecraft anvil is useful, but the order of enchanted books can make combinations more expensive than necessary. The enchantment calculator lets you test the order, compare XP costs and catch conflicts between enchantments before you combine books or apply them to valuable gear.

  • Everyday gear: Mending and Unbreaking are worth using on most items you keep using.
  • Resource gathering: Fortune is for extra drops, Silk Touch is for keeping block forms.
  • Save XP: Plan expensive books and high levels early before adding many small combinations.

Calculate the best order and XP costs

Plan your book order with the Minecraft Enchantment Calculator. It checks conflicts, level costs and combinations.
