How do I check prior anvil work?

Each anvil use increases the prior-work penalty. A level-5 book that you received directly and did not combine in an anvil has 0 anvil uses. A level-5 book that was combined from 2 level-4 books in an anvil has 1 anvil use.

How to estimate a book's anvil uses in Survival: Place the book alone in an anvil and check how expensive renaming would be. You do not need to actually rename the book.

Rename costs:

1 level = 0 uses 2 levels = 1 use 4 levels = 2 uses 8 levels = 3 uses 16 levels = 4 uses 32 levels = 5 uses 64 levels = 6 uses

The higher the number, the more expensive later combinations become.

The anvil system combines items and enchanted books. Each combination has a level cost based on the enchantment, level, item and previous anvil uses.

The order can make a big difference. The calculator compares possible paths and looks for a cheap anvil order so you can combine books, tools, weapons and armor efficiently.

XP costs and anvil penalties

Each anvil use increases repair costs and penalties from previous combinations. The calculator therefore shows both step-by-step level costs and the total XP impact of your selected enchantments.

Enchantment conflicts in Minecraft

Some enchantments cannot be used together, such as different protection types or certain weapon enchantments. The calculator detects these conflicts and shows which combinations are not possible.
